How to completely reset a tablet?
« on: April 24, 2018, 09:25:26 AM »
I have a Samsung note pro 12.1. it was a high end device when I purchased it several years ago. The take away here is it has 3gb which I think should still be sufficient to have a decent Android experience.

Problem is somehow I messed it up and there can be super extremely long painful pauses. Long enough you want to throw the tablet against the wall. If memory is completely cleared by closing all the apps then it becomes better for a short while.

I'm thinking maybe the problem is due to me messing with the memory settings when I had it rooted long ago. There are apps where you can change various memory settings when rooted.

Since then I've updated the tablet several times and even I think did it a few times when triggered with that software for flashing ROMs.

BUT it never actually was clean, my apps would still be there and so would this problem.

How can I reset it doing a clean install? I would prefer not to have to download any rom and install it over USB if I don't have to but if that's the only way then I'll do that too.

Any suggestions how I can do this? Thanks

Factory reset setting. Completely erases the device.

So it will wipe even my non os data like media files? On the main sd card? What about the external SD card is that untouched?

External SD card will be untouched. Everything in phone memory will go.

What ROM will it use? The latest installed?

Actually I never rooted and installed different ROM on my phone. So I don't know what happens after factory reset. Logically it should be the one you installed.

This is wrong. , a factory reset only wipes out the user data. Your system partition, and a few others, remain untouched. Cache and data will be wiped though.

so if a ROM install via ODIN didn't fix the slowdown problem, then factory reset probably wouldn't do anything different except that I also lose my data? What I'm trying to erase/reset are those memory settings that you can tweak with certain rooted apps - it was a few years ago so I don't really recall exactly what I was tweaking. I think it was related to at what memory levels apps are killed but I'm not completely sure, I think there were 2 or 3 different settings tweakable related to this.

I'm not sure about the memory threshold thing, but the answer to your first sentence is yes, it doesn't do anything except data loss.

JohnBelly is right. Always backup all your data before factory reset if data is important for you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24Jvf96780U for complete factory reset when tablet isn't working.
