Android and iOS combined accounted for a whopping 96.3% of all smartphone shipments worldwide in 2014. Android is on the top with 81.5% of the market, where iOS lacks behind with 14.8% only.

2014 Market Share

Ramon Llamas, Research Manager with IDC's Mobile Phone team, said - "Many of the same drivers were in play for Android and iOS to tighten their grip on the market, A combination of strong end-user demand, refreshed product portfolios, and the availability of low-cost devices particularly for Android drove volumes higher."

It's expected that Google's own OS will continue growing with more Android-powered device are released into the markets (Smartphones, Tablets, TVs, Smartwatches, Gaming consoles... etc).

This is a little bit misleading. I mean, of course android is going to have more market share, simply because it's offered on way more devices, at all price points. Apple devices are the only ones using IOS, and it's geared towards the richer class (or at least people who want to seem like they belong in the upper class). More important numbers are the sales numbers and the profit margins. Now, I can't speak for the sales revenue, but Apple has a MUCH larger profit margin for sure.

In any case, Apple is well on track to be a trillion dollar company in the next decade, so they're not exactly hurting.

Apple is taking over all the high end premium market, while Android is for the low end and most of the 3rd countries use android.

Apple makes high end beautiful products that just work, few bugs and great design with a hefty price tag.  Most android phones are cheap and you can get a crappy one for under 100$ off contract. More people can afford it that than the much more expensive IPhone which is why it dominates the market share.

I find it very impressive that Apple holds 15%. They have a handful of devices compared to android, I mean there are a around 10 iPhones and few iPads but there are thousand android devices. I never had an Apple device, only Android, so I can't tell why are people buying them, but my guess is that they want to look like they have a lot money, but that's just my guess.

Agreed it is misleading, Android is available and many mobiles and other electronics whereas IOS is only on Apple devices. For Apple to hold that much with only their own products is very impressive considering how big the market is.

Doesn't seem like a lot but Apple are doing extremely well worldwide :)

I wonder how much longer BlackBerry will be relevant for. You can see they are quickly losing their already small market share. Will 2015 bring an end to BlackBerry? Or maybe there will always be that small percentage of people that still stick around.

I can't believe there's that much of a gap. It doesn't surprise me, in the least, that they make up 96% of sales are by Apple and Android. But come on, 81%? I'm not sure if this has convinced me I need an android, because "a million chinamen can't be wrong", or do I want to help the little guys and buy one of theirs? The only real concern, either way, is customer service. Will the larger company have better CS, or will they be so busy that they keep you on hold for 2 hours?

Anyone who would read this post would automatically say this is an obvious market observation since most of cellphone manufacturers use the Android OS compared to Apple who has sole ownership on the IOS. Considering the 15% of the shipment  which Apple owns, it is quite a significant number compared to the 81% which is shared by almost a large number of cellphone companies (including mass producing China phone companies)

I'm not surprised. Androids are less expensive than iOS phones. They can do all the same things that iOS phones can do.  According to my brother, the Android is an inferior product though. I guess I need to show him this.

It's  not surprising at all, because of the media and the big hype we think that Apple products are everything, when in real life they own really small piece of the market.

Well, as long as their customers have the financial power to buy apps and services, it doesn't matter the percentage. The number of Android phones is high, mainly because there are lot of cheap devices. Hell, even 5 year old kids have Android phones. They are not able to buy apps or spend money on services, unlike most of the Apple users.

If iOS  became available for other devices I'm sure there would be a shift in theses numbers. That said I think the design and UI of iOS is lackluster at best. This type of comparison isn't very useful though. I find comparisons of device to device to be more useful.  Apple's iPhone is the clear loser in regards of quality and price in most cases even on a device by device comparison, but I would like to see how they stack up in usage against similar products instead of just against phones with Android loaded.

I don't think that it would be a loser, not as long as they have their own ecosystem. The reason I dont' use any Apple products is the fact that they're way too expensive and, even if people say that they're easy to use, the phones are pretty confusing in the beginning. However, I should buy at least an iPhone 5 for my job, because I lose a lot of opportunities for not having any device that runs iOS.
