Title: Do you miss old phones?
Post by: babyleans on August 01, 2014, 06:47:30 PM
Hi guys, back in the day i used to be a big fan of mobile phones. Unfortunately modern phones don't have nice designs like those of the past. They are all candybar style and they all look the same for the most part and are either running android or the ios. What do you think?

All phones have their own little unique thing about it, i really think so. At the initial stage i always tend to be a little frustrated when i am to take on a new phone. All new phones that i have upgraded to usually have a more modern type technology and over time i grow into it.

I don't miss my old phone at all. I mean I don't even need a GPS anymore, I can just use my phone instead. I dont need an IPod, i can stream music from anywhere I want. I can even play Gameboy games on it!

I really do! Back in the day of the classic Nokia with Snake and the excitement of the sounds and ringtones it had to offer it was amazing!

Nowadays all the phones seem to do the same things and there's no real surprises any more! They're all just slight upgrades to the last model!

I always remember getting my first Nokia phone and loving it so much, had an antenna and everything! Then a newer smaller Nokia came out with customisable casing! Such good times  :D

I don't think I will ever forget my first phone..... the first nokia that had a colour screen !  It was so exciting and even though it barely did anything, it worked and did what it was supposed to do well !
Nowadays the app store have game apps of the old loved snake game but I feel it's not like the original when you're playing it on a touch screen.  I loved it but I am extremely happy with my iPhone.  Just before I got my iPhone however there was a few months where I had to use an old phone because I was waiting to save up to buy the iPhone and it was crazy how I got so used to having interent at the touch of a button to having to spend an age typing a message with buttons and such.

I miss my first camera phone. It was a cricket flip phone, about 11 yrs ago. He talked me into buying it, and even took a picture of me and my son. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way that cricket didnt offer the 'sending pictures' service. Why would they sell my a picture phone if they won't let you send pictures???

I like the modern phone. I will agree, most of the new phones do look the same, but they do all have their own uniqueness. I do wish that phones would come in a lot more colors though than just black, white, gold and blue (other than the Apple iPhone 5c which came in multiple colors.) I like the functionality of the newer phones, you can surf the internet ( I remember the internet on the older phones!) and it is much easier to text rather than hitting the same button to get a specific letter.

I like the new phones better. Sure, they may look about the same, but their usefulness is much better than their very similar looks.

I do like the new phones better, but it's amazing how far these phones have come. We can't even drop these new phones without having them break. I hate how fragile the new phones are because I've broken a few of my phones because I dropped them. I think that it's amazing what these new phones are able to do, you can GPS where you need to go and your phone, is able to get you there. You can get on any social media that you want and talk to your friends. And you can also search the web for anything that you want. It's all at your fingertips. It amazes me because every day something new happens with these phones. There is always something new that these phones are able to do. So no I don't miss my old phone because these new phones are able to do such amazing things for us.

Sometimes,  I reminisce the times when life was simple and all we needed was simple phones. I miss Nokia 3310 the most, there are so many memories I can associate with this phone. I remember the times when you had to choose which casing would match your outfit for the day, you had colored back lights installed, you composed your own ring tone. Hehehe the memories won't stop coming :)

I agree with you. Phones back in the days had variety of designs to choose from. Currenly in design department mobile phones don't offer much of a choice. HTC One was a breath of fresh air amond the sea of rectangle bricks with a display when it came out in 2013, but apparently that design too is starting to fade.

I hope by the arrival of modular phones we can except some change in the industry.

I do have to say that I wish there was more of a choice. All the iPhone's and Galaxy phones are pretty much the same. Yes, the size does change but that is about it. I wish that they would change the way that they look. I"m sure that they never will though just because otherwise people might not want to buy the iPhone's.

I definitely think older phones had a lot more character. I miss the varying designs, the "innovation" that came with those times. Most importantly I actually think I miss the alpha numeric keypads and the physical qwerty keypads, they made typing so much easier. Now I'm constantly the victim of auto-correct. However, I'm not too sure whether I miss the phones themselves or just the actual time period.

I am so over android after being with it for a while now. I need a Blackberry ASAP because I did not nearly encounter as much problems as I did now, I just cannot go on with this phone, it is too lacking.

I definitely miss my old phone just because of one important part, battery life. My first phone was a Nokia 1680c and, I just loved how I could go a week and a half without charging it. Though a smartphone has incomparable advantages, I just wish the battery life could last just as long.

I do miss the old phones like Nokia and Ericsson. Though phones today are way high tech and can never be compared to old phones, they just have this nostalgia upon them that makes you smile. I have an old style phone still, where it can be flipped and it has no wifi connectivity or gps. But I love it and I use it for texting. Most people who see it love it and adore it's compact size. It looks like a pressed powder lol. It's the Alcatel Glam 810D.

Well, I miss the fact that I can throw them at someone without worrying about it getting broken! Hahaha :D.

But seriously, that's the only thing I miss about the old phones - durability, and probably longer battery life. You can have old phones not charged for like, 3 days. These days, practically a power bank is necessary.  But then again, that's the price we pay for... awesome features.

Lol, I remember those days where even if the phone fell from my bed (at that time, I'm in the top bunk), I wouldn't even worry about it breaking or being ruined. Nokia was such a frontrunner at that time. Almost all my classmates have that brand of phone. I also had the Nokia 3310 which was strong as a rock.

Do I miss the days of terrible reception, aerial antennas, buttons, and other moving parts that break? No way! Do I miss the limited functionality and choice? Not at all.

As for operating systems; Android, iOS, Blackberry, Windows, Ubuntu and others are all choices to be made. Sure iOS and android are the two most common but they aren't the only game in town.

I sometimes do get nostalgic for the old phones.  It creeps up on me when I break my new 500 dollar phone because I've dropped it for the hundredth time. I hate that every year there's a new upgraded version. How are you supposed to keep up really?  Still, if we had to go back, after knowing how far phones have come, it would be a complete nightmare. I'll stick with what's to come in the future.

Ok, so actually I have two phones. A really phon(e)-y haha! blackberry, with actual buttons and good texting surface. And a brand new android device, I used to have a sim card in it, but I moved to a new country so now I just use it a simple device, not a phone. It's a perfect solution for me because I always missed my old traditional phones.

I did love the flip phones. You could close it and protect the screen. However I love the smart phones because of the apps and internet and everything being right on your phone. I love having all the features of a smart phone. I also miss how long the old phones would stay charged. My smart phone will only stay charge 3 or 4 hours if I am using it a lot. The old ones would stay charged for days.

Older phones only had a longer charge because of their very limited functionality. The batteries were actually of lower quality and less capable then what we have now.

I really do miss a certain old phone of mine. It was that phone that held so many memories of me and my first love. It isn't really the phone's design and specs that I am missing right now, but the sentimental value of it.

I think people that miss old phones have a nostalgia filter on. From a durability and functionality perspective minus the nostalgia filter there isn't much reason to pine for older cellular phones.

I do miss some aspects of the phones from yesteryear. A big one is physical keyboards. I really miss having an actual keyboard to type on. That, to me, was much more efficient than the on-screen keyboards we're forced to use today. I also miss flip phones. It seems that these non-flip phones are kind of fragile and I'm always scared of messing up the screen from one thing or another. I didn't have to worry about that with flip phones. You could just flip it closed, throw it in your pocket and forget about it.

Unless you are referring to the cheaper low end smart phones out there a touch screen phone is actually going to be much more durable than a flip phone ever was. Mechanical parts are less durable, not more durable.

You are absolutely right about the deign. All of them look the same.  It is a trend and as long as it sells we will not see any changes. I personally do not appreciate these kind of dependency on a single device. It is quite scary if think about it. I like to limit my smart phone and use it when i really need it. Features like GPS, mapping, etc.. It is so nice to have all these in your pocket, i admit, but it is taking a toll, and i am not judging, i am not a hypocrite, but when you look around all you can see is young and old people walking around without even looking where they are going. When i go to see my friends on a drink or something, they look in their phones and smile like insane persons, they take pictures of food we eat or drinks we are having. I believe it is too much and it's not healthy. We should make the best use of it but this is not it. I miss my Siemens A35 :)

I had my first cellphone when I was around 12 years old. It was a Nokia 3210. And yes, I do miss it. Although I already have a smartphone now, I still use my basic Samsung phone. I prefer simplicity most of the time.

Oh the good old days back in the 90s when I got my first Motorola flip phone that looked more like a huge walkie talkie! But hey, I had one and was cool rocking it! There was no texting  on that big monster, no burning up internet data either. But boy was it built to last. I probably dropped that thing a couple dozen times, even had it roll off the back of my car and still didn't shatter the screen!

One side of me does feel a little nostalgia about phones when they were just phones.  On the other hand, I have to admit that I like the utility of phones now. You can do so much on a phone instead of talk....

Wait, that may not be such a good thing...

I know that my kids grandma has an old flip phone that has lasted about 6 years that they bought for $15. I have a new phone at least every three months. Seems like I use it a lot more and it definitely gets a bunch of wear and tear on it. Yet in the past 6 years I have probably had about 300 phones. So yes I miss the old phones. I should just buy a cheap phone and use that one to talk would save a lot of money.

I don't really miss them, what I really miss the most is the way people used to communicate with each other in a better way rather than just texting and that sort of thing. It's not a secret that new generation phones have turned most people into machines who cannot live without one of these devices to the point of caring about it more than their own lives. That's just my opinion though.

Unfortunately, in the country I live in you have to carry an old or simple phone with you in order to avoid getting robbed or if you get robbed, they won't take too much from you, it's a shame that we cannot use our phones out the street because you'll get jumped if you do so.

I miss Nokia model. As we all know Nokia 3310 was the most powerful and popular cell phone in that days of 2000s, also its snake game was amazing time pass.
