Broken S5 and contacts off it
« on: May 17, 2018, 04:13:37 AM »
Screen is dark, but the phone turns on (i can listen to it boot up and can hear it make sounds when the screen "wakes up") and i might be able to unlock it, but i can't tell if it's unlocked because i can't see the screen. USB debugging is likely off, and Google contacts is empty and no Samsung account. ATT backup service ended, so there's no help there either.

I'm thinking some kind of usb mirroring, but I'm not sure i can get that to connect. Looking for ideas or suggestions. Thanks!

Contacts are backed up to Google. Sign into gmail from a computer and go to contacts. Or just Google Google contacts and sign in.

Unfortunately, that's an opt in feature and he wasn't opted in

If you think the touchscreen works, get a USB OTG MHL cable to mirror the screen.

That's exactly what i want. He already has a replacement, just no way to get the contacts. What is the program/ method to do the mirroring?

You just need an HDMI cable and a laptop or monitor. The OTG MHL adapter should cast the screen without additional software (I think...). If you get stuck, the S5 was a pretty popular device, someone somewhere should have a guide!

So the otg has a USB female so it'd be something like:

Micro USB into phone

USB into USB female

USB into Computer?

Then what with the HDMI? And why not just regular micro USB into the computer?

Jeez I totally meant MHL, not OTG! Forgive me, I hope that makes much more sense.

Whenever I rock a new phone, as soon as I sign into my Google account, contacts will be auto sync'd.

Yeah, when you save a contact, at least on Samsungs as old as the S5, you can choose the save location for your contact like phone, SIM, or Google. And if you don't pick Google, it wouldn't upload to Google contacts, hence the situation I'm in. Now, all of it IS just backed up, but not on the older ones. So, once I get them figured out with whatever I need to do, I will do exactly that and have them all backed up.

Just get a new screen. You can find a new screen kit on eBay for around $30 or less and there are lots of instructional videos on YouTube. I've replaced the screens on my gf's Galaxy Mega and S4 at least twice and it's easy.

1. Get your screen reparied
2. Use HDMI cable/ OTGMHL adapter to screen cast on laptop or monitor
3. Gmail has your contact list, so don't worry, your contacts are not lost.
